Melanatal: A digital health education tool in the form of an app, to equip birthing people and clinical staff (e.g., midwives, student midwives, maternity care assistants, nursery nurses, health visitors etc) with better knowledge of the clinical presentation of different maternal/neonatal conditions on Black and Brown skin, as well exploring signs/symptoms of conditions that are more likely to affect Black and Brown birthing people and babies (e.g. jaundice, cyanosis, range of newborn rashes and marks, signs of sepsis, mastitis, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes etc).
Melanatal will be pivotal in improving representation and inclusion of Black and Brown birthing people and babies in maternal and neonatal education.
This platorm may be used by the midwifery multidisciplinary team, medical students and birthing people to refer to and escalate and advocate any identified concerns.
Improve clinician and service user knowledge to increase earlier detection rates and minimise missed opportunities for diagnosis to improve delay's in treatment of harmful conditions, which contribute to poorer outcomes amongst Black and Brown birthing people and newborns.
Improve neonatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Work towards building confidence and trust amongst Black and Brown communities within the equity and quality of training and education within the service we provide.
